Have you found a passion and would like to pursue it in a profitable way? Are you thinking of setting up a business venture, but you don’t know where to start?

Setting up a business in Malta comes with lucrative benefits, including taxation benefits and Malta Enterprise incentives, among others.

Choose your company type.

    1. Limited liability company, which can be private or public.
    2. General partnership, which are best suited for SMEs.
    3. Single proprietorship, where ownership is held by one person.
    4. Overseas companies, a foreign company with a brand in Malta.

Choose your company name.

Naturally, the company name must be original and reflect what business the firm will be engaging in.

Prepare the necessary documentation.

The required documents must be compiled and submitted to the Malta Business Registry (MBR). The Memorandum and Articles of Associations must be prepared. This document contains essential information such as the type of company, the company name, the company’s office in Malta, the company’s main trading activity, identification of the persons of corporate body, and other important documentation.

Obtain a Certificate of Registration.

Once the documentation is reviewed and approved by the MBR, a Certificate of Registration will be issued, which confirms that the company exists and has the authorisation to carry out acts of trade.

Register for VAT in Malta.

Once the company is registered and the Certificate of Registration is gained, one must register to pay VAT at 18%. Learn more about who is liable to pay VAT and the different types of VAT registration in Malta here (link to VAT Registration article).

Now what?

Once a company is incorporated, the company must provide Annual Returns and Accounts annually, and signed by an authorised representative.
